Clinton Showing Strength Clinton continued hitting Obama hard on national security which seems to be resonating with voters as she’s showing some surprising strength going in to tomorrow’s primaries in Texas and Ohio, threatening to end Obama’s 11 state winning streak. A new poll of polls shows Hillary leading in Ohio 48 to 43 and Obama leading in Texas 47 to 45. Reviving an old campaign tactic that was first used by Walter Mondale in 1984 and George H.W. Bush in 1992 against Bill Clinton, the Clinton campaign rolled out a new campaign video that shows a sleeping family while a blinking red phone rings, saying a crisis is going on in the world, and asking who the viewer wants answering the phone in the White House. Obama quickly responded with his own version of the same ad, sticking to his message that he’s more qualified because he spoke out against the Iraq authorization vote as an Illinois state senator, which he says represents his superior judgment. Clinton needs to win big tomorrow in order to remain in the campaign, though even if she wins, she will still face daunting math in the delegate count.

Calls for Clinton to Quit Pressure is mounting on Clinton to cede the nomination if she doesn’t rack up big wins in tomorrow’s primaries. The Republicans have already coalesced around their nominee and have started hammering Obama, and Democrats rightfully fear a protracted race will hurt their chances in the general election, where the differences with Republicans are vast, exposing both Democrats to sustained attacks from both sides of the political spectrum.

Florida May Re-Vote Republican Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced he would support holding another, this time official, primary vote for the Democrat party. Florida and Michigan held their primaries earlier than the DNC’s rules allowed, so currently neither state’s delegates are being counted. Both states voted for Clinton, who is aggressively trying to get the delegates seated, while DNC Chairman Howard Dean welcomed Crist’s comments since the cost of holding another primary would fall on the state. Democrat’s are divided over the issue (mostly depending upon whom they support) – some hold that rules were rules and the states forfeited their rights to delegates, while others are loathe to deny those voters a say, especially given that Florida Democrats are still bitter over the 2000 election where they feel they were disenfranchised.

Steinem: Torture, Shmorture Stumping for Clinton, feminist Gloria Steinem lashed out at McCain, derisively asking why his five years as a POW during the Vietnam War was a qualification for being President. She said she was glad “Clinton wasn’t trained to kill anybody” and thinks it outrageous that “from George Washington to John F. Kennedy [...] we behaved as if killing people is a qualification for ruling people.” She also argued that an open, contested Democrat convention could be a good thing, noting that “an open convention in New York City gave us Abraham Lincoln.” Clinton’s campaign quickly put out a statement distancing themselves from Steinem’s comments about McCain.

Obama’s Free Ride Over The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz reports that Obama’s free ride from the media may finally be over, with journalists finally asking the hard questions and scrutinizing his record. Among the incidents he cites are ABC asking Obama about Republicans’ attempts at painting him and his wife as unpatriotic, stories on Obama’s 130 “present” votes in the IL state senate, scrutiny of his nuclear regulatory bill that was largely rewritten by the nuclear power lobby, his ties to his anti-semetic pastor and indicted fundraiser Tony Rezko. This is not to mention the fire he’s taking from the Republicans – the first time he’s ever faced serious incoming fire in any campaign.

Wiretapping Compromise The House of Representatives indicated they may be near a compromise on the bill to reauthorize the controversial expired wiretapping law. The House objected to the bill passed in the Senate that granted telecoms immunity for their previous cooperation in tapping telephone conversations involving a US citizen without a warrant, and President Bush promised to veto the bill unless the House agreed to the immunity provision. The House is signaling it will likely agree to grant telecoms the protection.

WMD in Vegas A man is in a coma in a Las Vegas hospital after he apparently poisoned himself with the deadly poison ricin, a powerful agent that is best known as a chemical weapon that has no known antidote. It does not appear the man intentionally poisoned himself, and while authorities have not yet divulged his motive in making the poison, they said there is no evidence it’s terror-related. The man has been hospitalized since mid-February and the ricin was discovered last week when a relative was moving the man’s belongings out of his apartment after he was evicted; a day earlier, the same relative called police to come remove firearms he found in the apartment. People who knew the man claimed he “struggled to get by” in life.

Chavez Threatens War Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez ordered thousands of troops, tanks, and the air force to the Venezuela-Columbia border and withdrew all embassy personnel from Bogota; Chavez’s ally Ecuador also sent troops to their border with Colombia. Chavez claims Columbia is provoking a war after it attacked a camp of FARC rebels – a leftist group terrorizing Columbia for the past two decades - who had crossed the border into Ecuador. Siding with FARC, Chavez called Columbia a “terrorist state” and a puppet of the “US empire” that is trying to rule Latin America, and promised to soon “liberate” Columbians from American tyranny. US and Columbian officials had a muted response. Chavez has been attempting to antagonize the US for years, trying to build a Socialist political and military alliance in Latin America (and allied with Iran) to “fight” the US.

Russian Shocker In an expected result, Putin’s handpicked successor – Dimitri Medvedev – was elected as Russia’s new President on Sunday, receiving 70% of the vote to his nearest competitor’s 17%. His opponents claim the vote was rigged even worse than December’s parliamentary elections, though it’s unclear why they would go to the trouble – Putin effectively guaranteed Medvedev’s election via disqualifications, limiting state-controlled television coverage of opponents, and the like. Medvedev has announced he will appoint Putin as Prime Minister, where it’s expected he will retain ultimate control over the country.

Armenia Crackdown Protesting peacefully since a Feb. 19 contested Armenian presidential election, protests turned violent over the weekend, leading to the government imposing a state of emergency and dispatching the military to enforce it, resulting in at least eight deaths and more than 130 injuries. Some protesters claim the government sent provocateurs into the protests in order to justify a clamp-down.

Russia Cuts Gas Off Russia cut natural gas supplies to Ukraine by 25% after the two countries failed to reach an agreement on a gas pricing dispute.

Genocide is Back The “scorched-Earth” tactics of the janjaweed Arab militias are back in Darfur, where villages are being looted and burned to the ground and citizens being slaughtered. The militias are being backed by Sudanese government troops, tanks, and air power, with the government claiming they are only going after armed rebels who are attacking towns, despite residents claiming otherwise. The escalation in violence comes as the peace talks between the government and rebels unravel. A simplification is that the conflict is primarily driven by climate change and overpopulation in Darfur, pushing Darfur’s African population south and east into Arab-dominated lands where the two populations compete for resources.

US Played Role in Kenya After being criticized for initially doing too little to help resolve the disputed presidential elections in Kenya and condemn the rigged vote, the Bush Administration is now being credited for helping push the two sides into the power-sharing compromise that was announced last week.

Middle East

Brutal Retaliation, Cancelled Talks The tit-for-tat between Hamas and Israel continued to escalate - over the weekend, a dozen new long-range rockets were fired into a major Israeli city that until recently was effectively out of range, killing three Israeli citizens, with a total of at least 40 rockets launched. Israel continued to hit back viciously with airstrikes that have killed over 100 Palestinians since last Wednesday. Palestinian President Abbas announced he is suspending peace talks with Israel until the airstrikes stop, but reiterated he hopes an agreement can be reached by the end of the year. Despite the continued rocket attacks, Israel announced it is withdrawing the troops it sent into Gaza last week to clamp down on the violence.

IAEA: Iran’s Pursuing Nukes The confrontation with Iran over their nuclear weapons program has taken on a new sense of urgency after the International Atomic Energy Agency presented a trove of new evidence to international diplomats last week that showed work “not consistent with any application other than the development of a nuclear weapon”. Iran’s ambassador was “nearly shouting” in his denouncement of the evidence in the middle of the meeting. After the Bush Administration’s policy on the crisis was thrown into disarray by a US intelligence report that undermined their position, the EU has taken up the position of leading the international community’s pressure on Iran.

Ahmadinejad in Baghdad Iranian President Ahmadinejad became the first Iranian President to visit Iraq when he arrived in Baghdad on Sunday. The announced intention of the visit was to build relations between the two countries that were sworn enemies until the US invasion of Iraq. Ahmadinejad was asked on several occasions if he would continue allowing Iranian weaponry to cross the border, a charge he denied. Among other predictably ridiculous statements, Ahmadinejad announced that “there were no terrorists in the [Middle East] before the US invasion” – the US government brands Iran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

Another Pakistan Bombing A third suicide bombing in as many days was reported in Pakistan’s tribal region, the target being a town council meeting, the subject of which was putting together a militia to root the area of al-Qa’ida and Taliban-allied terrorists. Forty two were reported killed. A safe haven for the past few years, the tribal areas are increasingly turning against the terrorists, whose growing number of attacks are in turn driving public opinion even further against them.

Asia

Sino-Russian Cooling China and Russia have long been close military trading partners, but today new contracts have slowed down to near nothing as both sides rethink their interests in today’s world. Russia hesitates at China’s rapid military rise, fearing a return to the neighbors being adversaries, competing for land and resources, potentially leading to wars in which Russian technology is used against itself. China is demanding more sophisticated technology from Russia, requests that have consistently rebuffed, fearing not just the defense aspect, but the economic aspect should Chinese defense firms catch up to their Russian counterparts.

Europe to Build Tankers For the Pentagon In a striking move, the Pentagon awarded a $40 billion air tanker contract to a consortium of companies led by Northrop Grumman and the European parent of Airbus, ending Boeing’s lock on supplying tankers. The consortium stresses that while some major components will be manufactured in Europe, the bulk of work and final assembly will occur in the US, eventually creating as many as 25,000 new American jobs.

Oil Up, Dollar Down, OPEC Reconsiders The The Dollar closed last week at another all time low against the Euro ($1.53), while oil closed just under a record high (about $102). With oil prices taking their toll on the US economy, OPEC is reconsidering a plan to cut production this week. In an outrageous move, OPEC had previously announced they would be cutting production to keep oil prices in the $80-$100 range.

Wall St. Fleecing Main St. In yet another case of Wall Street fleecing the US consumer, municipalities are increasingly complaining that credit rating agencies are giving them unfairly low credit ratings, which ultimately result in taxpayers paying more for municipal debt than is justified, with billions in excessive profits going to the Wall Street investors buying the bonds.
Politics

Clinton & Obama Rolling In It Both the Clinton and Obama campaigns had record-breaking months in February, with Clinton raising over $35 million and Obama raising over $50 million. To put that in perspective, for the entire 2000 presidential campaign (primaries + general election), Al Gore only raised $132 million. Obama’s fundraising puts him in a difficult spot – he promised last year to accept public financing in the general election if his opponent does (and McCain has committed to it), but in doing so he will be limited to only spending $84 million in the general election. McCain has been slamming Obama for recently wavering on the issue. Hillary’s fundraising is a resurgence – only last month she had to lend her campaign $5 million in order to keep it in the black, though many believe that was a classic Clinton political move designed to fire up her donors, which is exactly what it did.

McCain: Obama Represents Past In a somewhat ironic move, 71-year old John McCain yesterday tried portraying Barack Obama as the candidate who represents the politics of the past. His point was that Obama’s central campaign theme of focusing on the 2003 decision to invade Iraq and getting out as soon as possible refuses to acknowledge reality and instead is only hopeful wishing that history could be revised. McCain was continuing his line of attack from Wednesday when he challenged Obama’s statement that he would consider sending troops back to Iraq if al-Qa’ida establishes a base there, when as McCain pointed out, al-Qa’ida already has a base there. Obama’s response was that al-Qa’ida wasn’t in Iraq until after the US invasion, a statement that to McCain’s point, doesn’t do much to deal with today’s reality.

Hillary Plays Gender Card, Again Hillary continues to play every card she can, this time going back to playing the gender card, saying she wishes there was “a little more of an even playing field”, while going on to say she doesn’t want any special treatment and ignoring the fact that her opponent is a black man. She continues to complain Obama is getting a free ride from the media, which to some extent is true, but has little to do with gender.

Fins To the Left As Clinton and Obama continue to clash in the Democrat primary, some party officials are getting worried that the candidates’ veering to the left is going to hurt the party in the general election. Both candidates – especially Obama – have taken surprisingly tough stances against globalization and trade in what many see as pandering to the left and particularly the unions. Some policy experts say their proposals have gone so far that moving back to the center will be difficult, and that pursuing the policies would risk undermining the ability to pursue the rest of their foreign policy agenda. As McCain stresses his appeal to independents in the general election, his camp sees these moves as “ammunition” for the race.

Bill to Declare McCain Eligible In response to questions raised about McCain’s eligibility for the Presidencydue to the fact that he was born in the Panama Canal Zone while his father was stationed there as a Naval officer, Obama supporter Senator Claire McCaskill introduced a bill that explicitly declared persons in McCain’s situation as eligible for the office. The issue arises because the Constitution dictates the President must be a “natural born citizen” but doesn’t go any further in defining what that means. The Canal Zone was American territory until 1999 when the US turned it over to Panama.

Bush Hits Obama Bush criticized Obama’s pledge to meet with Raul Castro as “extremely counterproductive” and said it will “send the wrong signal” for a US President to sit down with a human rights-abusing dictator without first setting terms. He also reminded the candidate that al-Qa’ida already is in Iraq and has been trying to establish a base there for the past four years.

Another Chinese Recall The FDA announced they are raising the number of patients who may have died from tainted herapin, a blood thinner manufactured by Baxter, to 21 from 4. The agency found “potential deficiencies” at a Chinese plant that manufactures a key ingredient. Baxter is recalling nearly all of its herapin products. This is one incident in a string of product recalls due to poisoned or tainted products coming out of China, including poisoned pet food, lead-bearing toys, and small toy parts that when ingested broke down into the date rape drug. China’s economic growth has been prioritized by the government over all costs and subsequently there is widespread corruption, intellectual property theft, workers rights abuse, long-term environmental damage, and lack of government standards and oversight.

Earth to Bush Subscribing to the political theory that saying something makes it so, without much supporting justification, President Bush announced the US economy is not “headed” for recession and the fundamentals are in place for a strong Dollar. To Bush’s credit, only about half of the leading economists in the US believe the economy is heading for recession, but the underlying fundamentals do not support Bush’s upbeat assessment. Banks likely have tens of billions of more writedowns coming as the credit markets continue to suffer, the real estate market continues to spiral down, the Fed’s ongoing interest rate cuts only add fuel to the already rising inflationary forces of higher oil / commodity prices, and unemployment is up.

FBI Probes Rocket Responding to a request from Congress, the FBI has opened a probe into whether Roger Clemens committed perjury when he testified before Congress that he never took steroids. Apparently there aren’t more pressing priorities for Congress and the FBI.

US Wins Prison Contest A report found the US incarcerates more of its citizens than any other nation, both in terms of sheer numbers and proportion of population. Currently 1 in 100 American adults are in prison, which translates to 2.3 million people. This compares to China’s 1.5 million and Russia’s 900,000. The high numbers stem from tough sentencing laws, rising crime rates, and the high number of drug offenders being caught.

The British press was aware of the situation and had agreed to keep it secret until the prince returned home. The situation was handled so quietly that nobody outside of the soldiers in his camp were even aware he was there. With his presence now known, he was flown out of his region, and likely the country, for as one officer said, every fanatic within 1,000 miles will be hunting for him. Having led missions that killed dozens of Taliban fighters, Harry acknowledges that even after returning home, “Every single person that supports them will be trying to slot me.” Originally slated to serve in Iraq, the British Army decided not to deploy him last year after a public furor in which al-Qa’ida put a bounty on his head and vowed to hunt him down – a decision made to protect the other soldiers stationed with him from unnecessary risk.

Gates Tells Turkey to Go Visiting Turkey, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates called on the Turkish government to end its incursion into Northern Iraq. Turkey is fighting Kurdish rebels who want to carve out part of Turkey to form an independent Kurdistan and who seek refuge in the Kurdish northern region of Iraq.

The conflict arose after the opposition party accused the incumbent president of rigging last December’s elections. The impasse devolved into tribal violence on several occasions that were marked by roving mobs hacking opponents with machetes.

Navy Show of Force for Syria The Navy moved the USS Cole - the guided missile destroyer attacked by Yemeni suicide bombers in 2000 – and other ships into the Mediterranean Sea near Lebanon. The move is seen as a signal to Syria that the US wants to see a legitimate, peaceful resolution to Lebanon’s heavily-contested presidential elections that were postponed for the 15th time this month. Syria has long controlled Lebanon, with Syrian troops stationed there for nearly 30 years until they withdrew under international pressure in 2005, and recently has been behind the assassination of several Lebanese officials. Syria’s government is split between a pro-Western faction and a faction that some say is a puppet of Syria and Iran and has close ties to Hizbollah. Israel launched a month-long war that devastated much of southern Lebanon in 2006 after Hizbollah crossed the border and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers.

Bush Blowing It in Pakistan? After voters resoundingly rejected Pakistani President Musharraf this month, the Bush Administration’s continued support for the former general is outraging Pakistani officials, the media, and the public at large, who are calling on the president to resign. Experts say the Bush Administration is grossly miscalculating the situation and missing an opportunity to build widespread public support for the US War on Terror. Pakistan is a crucial ally since the Taliban and al-Qa’ida have found refuge in the country’s impenetrable tribal areas, and the US has been inhibited in fighting them due to public opposition to Musharraf’s government and anti-American sentiment.

Israel-Hamas Continue Killing The tit-for-tat between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza escalated yesterday when eight long-range rockets were fired into a distant town that had never received such an attack before. Israel responded with more airstrikes, killing at least 19 Palestinians – most were militants preparing to or in the process of launching missile strikes, while at least four were boys, one of whom was an infant. The father of a killed senior Hamas commander was quoted as saying, “I thank God for this gift. This is the 10th member of my family to receive the honor of martyrdom.” Israel is threatening to invade with a “major ground force”.

Jolie Pens Plea in WashPost Angelina Jolie penned an article in the Washington Post regarding the plight of the four million Iraqis displaced by the war that have been in large part ignored by the US government. She appeals to the presidential candidates and Congress to provide the funding necessary for the UN care for the dispossessed , rightly pointing out that it’s a national security issue – four million Iraqis can only remain in neighboring countries as refugees for so long, what happens when their host countries kick them out and they have no where to go in Iraq? That’s a lot of potential al-Qa’ida recruits. She also points out the time to help is now – the “surge” has stabilized the country to a point where the US military, UN, and other NGOs feel it’s possible to begin bringing them home.

NATO Missile Attack in Pakistan A missile attack in Pakistan’s tribal region killed eight militants who were staying in a house known to be used for training Taliban and al-Qa’ida fighters. There is no official word from the Pakistan or US governments, but the strike was likely launched from a nearby NATO base, just over the border in Afghanistan. The issue of whether US forces should strike targets in Pakistan if the Pakistan government will not has become a contentious issue in the presidential election after Obama said he would send troops over the border even without Pakistani permission. A senior al-Qa’ida commander was allegedly killed inside Pakistan in January by an unmanned Predator drone, which are flown by the US Air Force and the CIA.

Diplomats hope the move is a signal from Cuba’s new president, Raul Castro, that he is intent on improving the country’s record on human rights.
Scrap One Child Policy? China announced they may scrap their “one child” policy, originally implemented to control population growth that already strains the country’s natural resources. China says the move may be necessary to support their aging populace. This despite the fact the country is already facing unprecedented pressures with the price of commodities skyrocketing and rampant pollution that is literally choking the country’s long-term growth. This announcement came a day after news outlets reported on a major Chinese river system that has turned “red and foamy” with toxic pollutants and that Beijing is shutting down factories and banning car use in the run up to the Olympics in order to temporarily clean up the capital’s air.

GDP Growth Slumps The Commerce Department reported GDP growth had slowed to 0.6% in the fourth quarter of last year. Some estimates see growth of 0.4% in the first quarter of this year, while others see the economy beginning to retract in the period. The Fed has said growth is its priority right now, and has consequently been cutting interest rates at a pace not seen for 25 years, despite the fact inflation is suddenly on the rise. The Fed is taking a risk that restarting growth will occur before stagflation sets in, where the economy isn’t growing yet prices are still rising. The US economy was mostly paralyzed by stagflation in the 70s.

Bernanke: No Stagflation, But Still Bad Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the US economy is nowhere near heading towards stagflation, despite data that suggest the contrary (rising inflation and declining GDP growth, the definition of stagflation). He reiterated his position that growth is the most important factor in the economy, all but telegraphing further interest rate cuts. Pointedly, the Chairman said the US is in a worse position today to deal with an economic downturn than eight years ago since then the government was running large surpluses, inflation was low, and the world’s credit markets were strong. He also predicted the combination of the downturn in the economy and the collapse of portions of the credit market will cause some small banks to close.

Sprint Loses $30B Sprint / Nextel reported an astounding nearly $30 billion fourth-quarter loss caused by further write-offs from Sprint’s purchase of Nextel and from customers abandoning the carrier, mostly because they can’t pay their bills, which is not surprising the company’s drive last year to sign-up customers with poor credit in order to boost subscription numbers.

Dollar Hits New Low The Dollar hit another new low against the Euro for the fourth day in a row and hit a three-year low against the Yen.

Politics

Clinton Attacks Obama’s War Inaction The Clinton campaign struck out at Obama on a topic that was raised in Tuesday’s debate – the fact that Obama is Chairman of the Senate subcommittee that provides NATO oversight, yet has not held a single oversight hearing since he became Chairman last January, a fact Obama acknowledge and attributed to the fact that he’s been too busy running for President. Clinton claimed this shows he “spends his time talking about change you can believe in instead of change you actually can count on”, pursuing her line of attacks on the viability of his rhetoric and his readiness to be President. This is highly relevant because Obama frequently criticizes the Bush Administration for bungling the war in Afghanistan and Obama’s committee is responsible for providing Congressional oversight for it. There was no direct response from the Obama campaign.

Democrats Concern Military Top US military commanders and foreign policy experts are expressing louder concern over the Democrats’ pledge to immediately withdraw troops from Iraq if they win the White House, repeating their position that a timetable or rigid phased withdrawal will be catastrophic. Both Clinton and Obama reiterated in their debate on Tuesday their commitments to have troops out within 12-16 months of taking office. McCain took issue with these stances yesterday, referring to Obama’s additional commitment to send troops back if al-Qa’ida establishes a base there, saying, “Al-Qa’ida already has a base there, it’s called al-Qa’ida in Iraq.” Obama in usual form preferred to respond with wishful thinking and an attack on the messenger instead of the message, saying, “There was no such thing as al-Qa’ida in Iraq until George Bush and John McCain decided to invade Iraq.” That may be true, but the reality is al’Qa’ida in Iraq exists, it remains a contradiction to Obama’s statements.

Poll Shows McCain Winning A new LATimes/Bloomberg poll shows McCain ahead of both Clinton and Obama. While general election polls count for little at this point, this poll is remarkable given the attention the Democrat race has been getting in the media. McCain beat Clinton 46-40 and Obama 44-42 (though that lead is within the poll’s margin of error).

Is McCain Constitutional? The New York Times raises the question of McCain’s eligibility for the presidency since the Constitution mandates to be eligible, a candidate must be a “natural-born citizen” and McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone while his father was a Naval officer stationed there. At the time the Canal was an American territory, but the Founders never defined exactly what constitutes a “natural-born citizen” and a formal legal interpretation has never been necessary. However, constitutional law scholars are in general agreement than McCain meets the criterion, but just to be safe, his campaign asked former Solicitor General (and 9/11 widower) Ted Olson to put together a detailed legal analysis. Ironically, the last time this issue arose was when Mitt Romney’s Mexico-born father ran for President in 1968. He didn’t win the nomination, so the issue never came to a head.

Right “Rejects” McCain Many far right conservatives have “rejected” McCain after he condemned the slams against Obama (including calling him a “Chicago hack” who is corrupt) made by a radio host who spoke prior to McCain at a rally in Ohio. McCain played the incident to strengthen his appeal to independents.

Superdelegate Defection Superdelegate Representative John Lewis announced he is switching his support from Clinton and giving it to Obama, calling it the most difficult decision he’s ever made.

Oil Tax Breaks? The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill that repeats $18 billion in tax breaks for oil companies and instead invests it in developing renewable energy sources. The bill faces opposition in the Senate and the White House has promised to veto it.

Conservative Giant Dies William F. Buckley, 82, was found dead at his home in Connecticut after a lengthy battle with emphysema. Buckley is widely credited with being one of the intellectual and political fathers of the modern conservative movement and royalty among the New York / Boston / Washington intellectual community. Among other things, he was known for his acerbic wit, mastery of the English language, founding the National Review and serving as its most prolific writer, writing a slew of fictional and political books, hosting a popular television show, participating in many televised debates, and agitating the political discourse in general. He got his start as a provocateur at age 8 when he wrote to the King of England, demanding payment of the war debt.

Rocket’s ‘Roids Congress has asked the Justice Department to open an investigation into whether Roger Clemens committed perjury when he testified before a House committee on Feb. 13 that he never took steroids.

Killer Cop Sentenced Ex-cop Bobby Lee Cutts was spared the death penalty and instead sentenced to life in prison for killing his pregnant girlfriend. His trial was notable for the over-dramatic testimony from Cutts that led to the prosecutor asking him if he had a cold because he “heard a lot of sniffling but don’t see any tears”.

Moscow May Rebuke Iran Russia, Iran’s advocate on the UN Security Council, announced they may support a third round of sanctions if Iran doesn’t halt uranium enrichment. Russia has cautiously been helping Iran build a nuclear power plant and supply it with fuel, and has previously sought to blunt the Security Council’s efforts to stop Iran from developing a nuclear program. Several new sources have arisen this week that provide additional evidence that Iran is indeed trying to acquire the ability to create nuclear weapons, and the International Atomic Energy Agency says there are still outstanding questions about the program that Tehran is not answering. China, another Iran ally, too has indicated it may support more sanctions.

Mafia Looks for Growth Sicily’s mafia is sending representatives to rebuild its networks with the US mafia that frayed in the 80s and expand its influence beyond the US drug trade.

UK Quake Costs The strongest earthquake to hit Britain in 25 years is estimated to have caused about $20 million in damage on Tuesday, though there were only minor injuries and no fatalities.

The Friendly Russian President Dimitri Medvedev, the next President of Russia, is making a concerted effort to project a more gentle and diplomatic persona, in stark contrast to Putin’s ice-cold, confrontational approach to leading the country. His doing so will heavily influence future relations with the West since Putin has been taking Russia down a militant path that increasingly looks like the Cold War.

Kenya Protests Called Off Kenya’s opposition leader called off mass protests scheduled for tomorrow, which were likely to lead to tribal violence as they have in the past, killing over 1,000 people since December’s contested elections. This comes a day after former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan called off peace talks due to a lack of progress and “leadership”, though Annan has been meeting privately and separately with both sides. The conflict was sparked by an election that was allegedly rigged by the incumbent president and has paralyzed what was previously regarded as one of Africa’s most stable countries.

Al-Qa’ida’s Latest Evil Al-Qa’ida insurgents in Iraq have stooped to another new low. The Iraq Army is reporting insurgents are increasingly using “sticky IEDs” – small but powerful plastic explosives that are covertly taped to an object and remotely detonated. They have been placing the IEDs underneath cars and fuel tankers unbeknownst to the drivers, as well as animals and occasionally humans. Just a few weeks ago al-Qa’ida strapped explosives to two mentally ill women and sent them out into crowded markets and detonated the bombs remotely.

Turkey Won’t Go Despite calls from both the Iraq government and the US military to end their incursion, Turkey is refusing to set a timetable for withdrawing troops from northern Iraq who are fighting Kurdisk PKK rebels. Turkey sent troops over the border last week to chase down the militia that has been regularly attacking southern Turkey in the hopes of carving out a region from Turkey as part of a new Kurdish nation.

Israel Strikes Palestinian Ministry In retaliation for a volley of 40 Qassam rockets launched from Gaza, Israel launched a series of airstrikes that hit the Palestinian Interior Ministry and rocket staging and manufacturing sites. The Qassam attack killed one Israeli and according to Hamas, Israel’s airstrikes killed at least eight Palestinians, two of whom were children and five were Hamas militants. Public pressure is mounting on the Israeli government to negotiate with Hamas, who took over Gaza in a coup, and have been regularly launching rocket attacks against Israel, whose right to exist they refuse to acknowledge.

Cleric Rebukes Ahmadinejad In a rare episode of internal dissent, the AFP is reporting a top cleric lashed out at Ahmadinejad’s foreign policy as hurting the country during a recent speech, saying “Does foreign policy mean expressing coarse slogans and grandstanding? This is not a foreign policy.” This comes after the president’s latest statements on Israel, calling the country a “dirty microbe” and “savage animal”.

FARC is a rebel group that opposes the Columbian government and US influence and shares ideology with the socialist Chavez. FARC has terrorized Columbia for decades and is famous for kidnappings and its involvement in the drug trade. Chavez has been attempting to put together an anti-US, socialist alliance in Latin America and has been trying to buy regional influence with his country’s oil wealth.

Cuba to Wobble? The US intelligence community believes political instability could rise in Cuba over the next year as the populace expects change after Fidel Castro’s retirement.

Containing the Dragon in India Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in India, working on strengthening military ties with the country. Looking to modernize it’s military, India is a giant potential customer for US aircraft, ships, submarines, and tanks. Gates has been in Asia as part of the Bush Administration’s policy of building a bigger and stronger defense alliance in Asia to maintain regional stability and contain China, who has been aggressively building a military tailor-made to fight the US by stealing American technology and national security secrets. India welcomes the closer ties with the US and the sharing of advanced American technologies, but it is hesitant to do so at the expense of tradition ties to countries like Russia, who supplied military technology during the Cold War.

Thirsty Olympics The diversion of water supplies for the Olympics threatens serious agricultural, humanitarian, economic, and environmental harm.

Business & Economics

The Fed to Keep Slashing Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke testified to the House Financial Services Committee that the Fed is prepared to further cut interest rates since it prioritizes market stability and growth over controlling inflation. The Fed has recently made dramatic interest rate cuts, the advisability of which are questioned by some at a time where the Dollar is hitting all-time lows and inflation is rising at the fastest rate in decades.

Europe Slaps Microsoft, Again The European Commission slapped a $1.35 billion fine on Microsoft for failing to comply with a 2004 antitrust ruling that determined Microsoft was over-charging developers for access to its technical documentation. This is the first time the commission has had to fine a company for non-compliance with a ruling.

Golden Gold In a reflection of the falling Dollar and uncertainty in the economy, Gold is trading at nearly $1000 an ounce, a price its never reached before.

Exxon Fighting Valdez Fine Exxon Mobil is asking the US Supreme Court to cut down as excessive the $2.5 billion it was ordered to pay in damages for the 1994 Valdez oil spill in Alaska. The company has already paid nearly $3.5 billion in other fines, costs, and payments to affected individuals and businesses. To put the fine in perspective, it represents less than three weeks of profits for the company that earned nearly $12 billion in the first quarter of this year.

More Mortgage Mess Fannie Mae announced a $3.6 billion loss for the fourth quarter due to higher default rates and falling home prices. Regulators are considering loosening rules to allow Fannie and its competitor Freddie Mac to buy more mortgages and help prop up the mortgage market.

Japan’s Output Slumps Japan’s manufacturing production fell by more than twice what was expected, apparently due to a cooler American market, the falling Dollar, and the economic slowdown ripple effect starting to be felt in other markets.

Dems Final Debate? Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama participated in their 20th debate in Cleveland last night, their last debate and meeting before the pivotal March 4 primaries in Ohio and Texas. Many expected Hillary to come out swinging since she has to win both primaries to have a realistic hope of staying in the campaign, but after a combative beginning, there weren’t many fireworks. The debate started with Hillary going on the offensive, repeating accusations that Obama’s health care plan is not universal health care and will leave 15 million American uninsured, and not letting the issue die without getting the last word. Brian Williams noted the first question led to a 16 minute debate. Hillary “The Fighter” showed up, displaying her policy mastery, pointedly going after Obama on campaign tactics(his sending out “misleading” mailers on her health care plan and positions on NAFTA), and repeating her frustrations that the media are giving Obama a “free ride” while grilling her (even citing a Saturday Night Live skit to the effect from the weekend). The hosts did a good job of holding the candidates to their statements and apparent contradictions. For Clinton, she was pressed on her past support of NAFTA and her recent statements contradicting that. Obama was called out on his promise to accept public financing and his recent apparent backing away from the commitment. While Clinton scored some points in terms of policy and her preparedness, Obama successfully played the role of front-runner and cooly responded to the attacks. Altogether, the debate did not prove to be the turning point Clinton needed to resurrect her chances.

Dodd Endorses Obama Former presidential candidate and former DNC chairman Senator Chris Dodd endorsed Obama yesterday, lending additional needed foreign policy credibility to Obama’s candidacy. Prior to Dodd’s announcement, it was reported he had an “uncomfortable” phone conversation with Clinton, encouraging her to drop out for the good of the party.

McCain Repudiates Obama Slams At a McCain rally in Ohio, a local conservative radio host was warming up the crowd when he launched into a tirade against “Barack Hussein Obama”, calling him a “Chicago hack” who practices “Daley-style politics”, is involved in Chicago corruption, and implied Obama’s foreign policy proposals involve getting our adversaries together to sing Kumbaya. McCain was not on stage at the time and did not hear the comments, but immediately following the event he “took responsibility” for and repudiated the radio host’s comments, saying they had no place in the campaign. Since McCain has the Republican nomination locked up, this will likely help McCain in the general election since he can be seen as distancing himself from the “right wing”.

Obama Passes Clinton, Not McCain While Obama has widely caught and surpassed Clinton in national polls, he still faces a tough matchup against McCain, who still comfortably leads when it comes to national security.

Democrats Try New Iraq Approach After failing to deliver on promises to bring troops home from Iraq, Senate Democrats are attempting new tactics to end the war, focusing on the costs and the toll being taken on the preparedness of the military.

Bush Promises Veto on Housing Bill President Bush promised to veto a proposed Democrat bill that would provide $4 billion to communities for purchasing and rehabilitating foreclosed homes, allow consumers to re-negotiate interest rates, and modify bankruptcy laws. The White House says the bill is too costly and as written, the provisions would actually contribute to the troubles in the housing market and wider economy.

Bill Muzzled The New York Times is reporting on how Bill Clinton has been “muzzled and leashed” since his outbursts that hurt Hillary’s campaign. He is being kept far away from the national media and is reportedly drawing less than capacity crowds.

Florida Blackout As many as 6 million Floridians were affected by a power outage that hit most of the state for up to several hours yesterday. The outage was sparked by a switch that failed and a voltage regulator that subsequently caught on fire in a Miami substation. The failure kicked off a rapid sequence of events that led to the automatic shutdown of numerous power plants throughout the state, including two nuclear plants. Service was rapidly restored throughout the state with only a few thousand households still without power Tuesday night. Authorities are investigating why the system failed to handle what should have been routine equipment problem.

Village Sues Over Global Warming A coastal Alaskan village that is being forced to relocate due to rising sea levels is suing a slate of energy companies, including BP and Exxon Mobil, for causing global warming.

Killer Organ Farming Surgeon A California surgeon is being charged with hastening the death of a disabled and brain damaged man in order to harvest his organs.

Serbs Attach US Embassy Again A Serbian protest against Kosovo’s declaration of independence turned violent, with a small group of protesters trying to attack the US embassy once again, but were fended off by riot police and tear gas. The protests were in response to Kosovo officials saying they will never cede “an inch” of territory back to Serbia and implying NATO will provide the military muscle to guarantee that.

England Earthquake An earthquake registering 5.1 on the Richter Scale hit England yesterday with the epicenter in Lincolnshire, central England. The quake was felt throughout most of the country but only caused minor structural damage and there were limited reports of minor injuries. The UK gets hit with such earthquakes every 10-20 years, though this was the biggest in 25 years.

French Troops, But No Fighting The US has been asking NATO to send more combat troops to Afghanistan and France may soon comply, but will only send troops to relatively peaceful eastern Afghanistan, not the violent south where they are needed most.

Seed Bank Opens A seed bank buried in arctic ice opened in Norway on Tuesday morning. In order to preserve seed genetic diversity and rare varieties from extinction via climate change, war, or some other mass calamity, the vault was established with money primarily from the Gates Foundation and the Norwegian government. Surprisingly, the project is not without controversy – some argue it takes the rights to unique varieties away from local regions and farmers, while others worry about who will have access to the seeds.

Africa

Darfur Getting Desperate Thousands are getting desperate for basic humanitarian assistance in Darfur, suffering from the latest round of violence where government forces and allied militias have been attacking the region for the past few weeks, including the resumption of aerial bombing this week. Under increasing international pressure, China finally exerted some public pressure on Khartoum, calling on the government to cooperate with the international community and allow a full peacekeeping force to the region, which they have so far refused to do. China has extensive economic and military ties to Sudan, giving them unique influence in the country.

Annan Calls Off Talks in Kenya Kofi Annan – the former UN Secretary General who has been mediating talks to end the violence and unrest in Kenya - made good on a threat from Monday and announced yesterday that he is suspending talks due to a lack of progress and “leadership”. He indicated he will still meet privately with the two sides. Kenya has been in conflict since December’s elections, in which the incumbent president has been accused of rigging the vote. The dispute has sporadically spilled over into tribal violence that has killed more than 1,000 people.

Middle East

US Eyes & Ears in Pakistan Due to rising public anger over recurring suicide bombing attacks, the Pakistani government is allowing the US to quietly expand its “eyes and ears” on the ground in the tribal areas that serve as havens for the Taliban and al-Qa’ida. The US is setting up centers in which US agencies will cooperate with the Pakistani Army and intelligence service, deploying up to 30 counterinsurgency trainers, and launching a $500 million program to develop roads, schools, and other infrastructure in the region.

Sudan Bans Danish Sudan has announced a ban on all Danish imports after Danish newspapers reprinted this month political cartoons critical of the Prophet Muhammad that caused riots and triggered death threats from the Muslim world when they were originally printed in Denmark in 2006. This comes the day after the Sudanese government resumed bombing in Darfur.

Saudi Flirting Crimes Saudi officials have begun investigating 57 men arrested last week for flirting with girls. Their crimes include improper dress, playing music, and dancing to get the attention of the girls.

Asia

Choking Olympics China is desperately trying to cut down on pollution before the Olympics through a host of temporary means, such as restricting car usage and seeding rain clouds to “flush” pollution from the air. The country is literally choking on its rampant growth, with water sources drying up and / or becoming toxic, soaring pollution-related disease, and some of the most toxic air in the world. The air in Beijing is so bad that Olympic teams around the world are designing special breathing masks for their athletes and staging teams just outside of China so they don’t have to spend any additional time breathing Beijing’s air.

Rousing N. Korea Sendoff The New York Philharmonic’s visit to North Korea culminated with a rousingperformance in Pyongyang. The performance opened with the North Korean and American national anthems - unprecedented for a member of the “Axis of Evil” – and ended with a five-minute standing ovation after an emotional performance of a Korean folk song that left both the audience and orchestra in tears. The White House downplayed the significance of the event saying it didn’t change anything diplomatically and that North Korea still has questions to answer about their nuclear weapons program.

Business & Economics

Markets Defy Gravity & Stagflation? The stock market closed up for the third day in a row, despite a slew of bad economic news and indicators, giving some hope that the economy’s underpinnings are not as bleak as the indicators suggest. One report released Tuesday showed wholesale inflation jumping at the fastest rate in 26 years and another showed consumer confidence continuing to slide. These reports add further to worries that the economy may be facing stagflation - where prices rise while the economy stagnates or shrinks – a malady economists thought they’d conquered in the 70s. If stagflation does take hold, it will be in no small part due to the Fed’s radical interest rate slashing done to appease Wall Street. Good news that helped buoy the market included IBM’s announcement of a $15B stock buyback and results that surpassed analysts’ estimates reported by Target, Rite Aid, and RadioShack.

Dollar Hits All Time Low Primarily driven by prolonged outlook of low interest rates and GDP growth, the Dollar hit an all time low yesterday against the Euro, with 1 Euro now costing $1.50. The Dollar continues to spiral downward with no end in sight, putting further pressure on the prices of commodities, which are predominantly priced on Dollars (especially oil). As recently as 2002 the Dollar was still worth more than the Euro.

New Oil Record Oil prices closed at a new high yesterday at over $101 per barrel, with some experts speculating gas could hit $4 per gallon by spring.

Google Discovers Gravity Google’s shares slid another 5% yesterday on reports that advertising revenues were stagnant after falling for the last three months of 2007. Google’s shares are down over 30% since the beginning of the year after spending years at a valuation considered to be ridiculously overpriced by many.

Starbucks Shutdown Every one of Starbucks’ 7100 US stores closed yesterday between 5:30pm and 8:30pm for staff re-training, designed to improve the customer experience. The move is part of CEO Schultz’s plan to turn sales around. Starbucks reported stagnant growth last quarter for the first time in its history, due to increasing competition from McDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts, as well as higher costs from an unfocused expansion into prepared foods and other offerings beyond coffee.

Getting Desperate The Clinton campaign took another turn for the nasty, leaking to the Drudge Report this photo of Obama in traditional Somali dress from a 2006 visit to Kenya. Obama’s campaign called it a dirty trick, and Clinton responded in classic form saying, “I know nothing about it… Why is anybody concerned about this?” No doubt this was leaked with the upcoming Texas primary in mind, where being seen in Muslim-looking dress will not win any votes. The New York Times is calling this one prong of a new “5-point” attack on Obama – the others being intensified attacks on his lack of experience, comparing his to Bush’s in 2000 – launched partially in the hopes of throwing him off-balance for tonight’s debate in Cleveland and partially as a Hail Mary since the March 4 primaries in Ohio and Texas are her last hope of salvaging her campaign. The Washington Post has a brief piece that summarizes the desperation being shown by the Clinton camp, saying ridiculous things like, “We’re on our way to locking this nomination down.” Increasingly they are being called things such as “out of touch” and “delusional” by non-aligned Democrats and pundits.

You’re Still Here? Mike Huckabee continues to insist on staying in the race, despite the fact that it’s a mathematical impossibility for him to win the nomination. He is pointing to the New York Times hit piece that insinuated McCain had an affair as an example of how anything can happen before this summer’s Republican convention in Minneapolis. Huckabee appeared as himself in a hilarious SNL skit over the weekend in which he refused to leave the set of Weekend Update after his “weclome was up.”

The woman’s family, who were traveling with her, claim the flight crew initially refused her requests for oxygen, and when they finally did try to provide it, both oxygen tanks were non-functional. The proposed deployment in Eastern Europe is strongly opposed by Russia, who recently threatened to point nuclear missiles at neighboring countries that agree to take part. The shield is intended to prevent ‘rogue’ states such as Iran and North Korea from hitting the US or its allies with nuclear missiles.

Turkey invaded Northern Iraq last week in an ongoing battle against the Kurdish separatist forces who want to carve out a portion of Turkey and have been waging an ongoing insurgency. Turkey invaded with the tepid approval of the US while the Iraqi government has demanded an end to the fighting as they fear it could end up drawing the Iraqi Kurdish forces into the conflict. Northern Iraq is highly autonomous dating back to the first Gulf War, dominated by Kurds, and used as a base for the Turkish PKK rebels.

More Iran Nuclear Evidence Documents disclosed yesterday by the International Atomic Energy Agency represent possible evidence of an Iranian nuclear weapons program existing after 2003, the year in which a recent US national intelligence estimate concluded Iran suspended nuclear weapons design work (but not necessarily their overall weapons program). Naturally, Iran claims the documents are forgeries, just as they’ve claimed all past evidence was forged. This week the same dissident group that initially exposed Iran’s secret nuclear program claims to have evidence the government has started a new, accelerated nuclear weapons program near Tehran. The US promised a Security Council vote “soon” on a third round of sanctions after a meeting at the State Department with the other permanent members. This is a stark contrast to life in Pyongyang and beyond, which entails daily rolling blackouts and famine. In addition to performing, the Philharmonic is giving master classes to North Korean musicians and touring parts of the country in a 400-person entourage that includes journalists and private citizens who have paid $100,000 – the largest number of Americans to visit the country since the Korean War.
Ralph Nader announced he is running for President for the fourth time in a row. Democrats were upset by the move since they widely believe he caused Al Gore to lose the 2000 election to Bush.

DNC Sues McCain The DNC is filing a lawsuit against the McCain campaign, saying they are breaking election law by backing out of public financing for the primaries, after using it as collateral for a campaign loan. This is a potentially dangerous move since the Obama campaign is now backing away from its own promises to use public financing. Context: What is Public Financing?

Hillary Goes Nuclear Hillary Clinton is going nuclear as her campaign continues to implode leading up to the “do or die” March 4 primaries in Ohio and Texas. She is now outright mocking Obama’s campaign platform of “hope” and “change”, saying he will not “open the sky” to “celestial choirs” and be able to change Washington with a “magic wand”. While his message is arguably light on details and his resume light on experience, this has to be one of the first times in history that a major, viable candidate borders on attacking optimism. This is particularly astonishing given 1) Bill owes much of his political success to his unshakeable optimism, and 2) the Clintons should be savvy enough to realize she’s taking on the role of Carter while Obama is playing Reagan. She also slammed him in Ohio for campaign mailings that distort her health care policies.

Dem Flip-Floppers Obama and Hillary are slamming each other for flip-flopping on policies. Clinton points out Obama used to call for an immediate end to the Cuba trade embargo, but he now says the country needs to first show progress in human rights. In trademark Obama form, he dodged the issue and shot back saying she flip-flopped on immigration.

More Flipping Speaking of flip-flopping, the Washington Post has an interesting story on how people / politicians come to believe what they say, even if they initially were being insincere.

NYT McCain Sex Story The New York Times continues to get blasted with criticism – from the Washington Post, it’s own ombudsman, the LA Times – over last week’s McCain hit-piece, in which it not-so-subtly suggested he may have had an affair with a lobbyist, despite a complete lack of evidence except for anonymous “disillusioned” former aides.

While the official line is that the government will continue pursuing Fidel’s policies, Raul has shown signs that he plans some reforms, specifically with regards to the economy, which has long suffered under a US trade embargo, and has recently been propped up with Venezuelan oil money from Hugo Chavez. Some in the US, including Obama, have called for a reevaluation of the embargo, while others point out real change will not occur in Cuba until Fidel dies.

A Chinese envoy arrived in the country to help “resolve” the crisis. China has close economic ties to Sudan and is under increasing international pressure to use their influence to end the fighting. Steven Spielberg announced last week that he was no longer going to serve as the creative director for the Olympics in Beijing this summer due to their lack of action in Darfur.

A Feb. 22 report from the International Atomic Energy Agency indicated Tehran still has questions to answer about their nuclear program. A recently released US national intelligence estimate concluded Iran had stopped work on weapons design. The Iranian government has seized on the report, calling it a “victory” for them, and demanding an apology from the US – a claim renewed by President Ahmadinejad over the weekend.

Soaring commodity prices (particularly oil) and the US Federal Reserve’s dramatic interest rate cuts are primary in driving the concern. Despite the rapid leaps in inflation measures, many central banks are loathe to raise interest rates to combat inflation while the Fed is cutting rates, since doing so will attract influxes of foreign investment, further driving up inflation.
